My tail gets on the plane and finds a spot towards the back of the bus…the way back, since assigned seats out of Ethiopia were optional. We flew for a few hours and touchdown, landed in Johannesburg. The airport was beautiful, there was shop upon shop and my first step was to find hot weather clothing. I packed for Denver (check out part 1 of the trip) in December. Needless to say, I was planning for snow and snowboarding when I left Afghanistan. I had only brought jeans and sweatshirts and I was already beginning to melt. I found the first store that had clothes that were somewhat close to my style.
I changed in the bathroom and wa-la, I was ready to take on Africa. I made my way through the airport to the outdoors where I was headed off to the Marriott downtown set to await my boyfriend’s arrival. His happy tail was traveling from the states and I was coming from Afghanistan, so the rate of arrival put us at a few hours’ difference. I had that day to get prepped and I was ready for my trip down to Durban. At this point I knew I was heading somewhere, but my geography had eluded me. Durban was a few hours away and it was the location he had flown into. My driver picked me up and away we went.
We drove for quite awhile and I had the opportunity to look around and see the area. It was nothing at all like I had expected. Where was the desert, the animals, and the tribal people? This was a built up area, cities, and typical asphalt roads and the views were amazing. The trees, the green and the beauty of the area was seriously surprising and then I made it a gorgeous resort just outside of Durban to the north called The Oyster Box.
I had plenty of time to get rested before he got there. After being apart for 7 months, looking like I’d been traveling for 2 days was not on the to-do list. He made it to the hotel that evening and our trip was ready to begin.
The resort was gorgeous, the people were amazing, it was so nice and warm, the view was perfect, and I was a happy girl. We stayed at this spot for a few days and it was perfect get into country and just relax spot. Then it got interesting….
Wait for it, wait for it… I’ll post it soon 🙂
Here’s the first few parts of the trip (just in case)
