I figured I would make it easy for you to see the challenge all rolled up into a single post. Below I discuss each of the steps for the 30 day challenge as referenced by www.30dayblogchallenge.com. Take a look see if you haven’t previously followed along!
Days 1-2: The first 2 days was all about Blog setup & Hosting, profile building, and getting comfortable with WordPress. If you haven’t used this software previously, it will probably take the first few weeks to get comfortable utilizing it.
Days 3-6: was all about filling up the blog with posts. Check out my youtube for notes and tips on these days!
Days 7 & 8: On day 7, was all about setting up social media. If you guys are like me in any way, you probably have used social media for anything but pictures on Facebook. I’m attempting to give you only an overview of each of the identified social media outlets, but there is so much to learn. (please refer to www.30dayblogchallenge.com for proper instructions). This will take several hours to complete (closer to 4-5) to make sure you’ve updated and linked everything properly. You may miss things, but then again, it’s all about learning. As you go through you will be instructed on how to insert various social media sites into your blog. Placement is up to you. So take your time, set it up, and get everything linked together to ensure your media speaks to one another.
Today we were to set up the following 3 social media sites:
Instagram – Photo sharing site. This can be used to promote your blog with excellent photos represented on your site.
Twitter- Sharing messages with the world at light speed.
Twitter takes quite a bit of time get to going and acquire an audience. You can select and follow up to 2,000 followers and then it blocks you (until followers and following are almost equal). If people follow you back, great, and if not you are stuck for some time. Depending on how active you are, it may some time to get your followership up. So far it has taken 3 weeks (about 15-20 new followers a day) to get up to the 700 follower mark. At this point Twitter has stopped me from following others until my followership rises (sorry all, I will start following you guys when I can)! The next important step in this process is to ensure you are providing excellent content. Without good content, you won’t be able to build a
Day 9: Asking others to put the word out for me was difficult. I guess for me asking for favors when I’m not sure if the blog is all that great or something worth reading, is scary. I do have to look though at the results thus far of the blog and how many people are subscribing to it. It does give me hope that people are enjoying the blog and it makes me push to put out another post. So, I did get the message out and I’m hoping that my friends re-tweeted or shared my blog with their networks. I certainly appreciate everyone that is helping me in this endeavor. We’re rolling and I know it will take time to build a presence so I’ll just keep pushing. Baby steps Baby steps.
Day 10: On this day the assignment was just to share the blog on social media. I know I rushed this step in the beginning and was sharing all along since my point was to share this process with you all about the blog challenge along with starting the new travel blog. I understand the point though. If you don’t have another motive, it would certainly behoove you to wait until you have a good amount of info on y our blog. If you haven’t written enough all along, you would be sharing an empty blog, and that would defeat the purpose. So, definitely decide what you would like to do and roll with it.
I also have another recommendation for you. In regards to timing of getting a 30 day, or whatever type of challenge completed, complete it a number of days before and then post. This will ensure you are posting ahead of schedule. For me, knowing that there’s not enough information to share for a particular day pushes me back a day or two when I share leaving a day or two without posts between the next post. So if you can create your content a bit ahead of time, you are able to keep your audience fully engaged.
Day 11: of the 30 Day Challenge and my assignment to day was to find 10-20 Travel Blogs and comment constructively on each. Make sure you refer back to www.30dayblogchallenge.com for actual instructions. My input on this part… it takes more than just 1 day to read and provide constructive input to each. The fun part about doing this is that I already am learning so much from my peers. My fellow travel bloggers have so much knowledge that I had never considered. So I’d like to share just a few interesting things I learned today. I was made aware of a few websites where you can earn income on a freelance basis by doing various types of jobs for folks.
www.fiverr.com A website that matches buyers and sellers for anything from a professional service to having girls write random things on their boobs for $5 bucks a pop. Oddly enough, people are buying this… sh…t (stuff). LOL. Love it. Although the big burley guy that will say anything on video while he is in the shower, up to 50 words worth for $5 bucks, amuses me to no end. Too funny. I’d almost consider doing that for a male friend of mine.
www.elance.com This is a freelance website that matches buyers and sellers for jobs such as writing, mobile developers, programmers, designers, marketers, etc. You list the job and the price you are willing to do the job for and the company takes 8.75% of the price you charge.
http://www.trustedhousesitters.com Housesitting abroad. This website allows for you to put your information out there and what you are desiring for house sitting projects in the locations you would like to visit around the world. This seems like such a cool concept. It appears pet sitting could also be part of the deal. So if you want to travel and can’t have a pet by your side, you may be able to pet sit someone else’s pet.
This process certainly takes some time. Give yourself a few days to comment appropriately. I used this along with Day 10s strategy since it took 3 days for me to meet the requirement. As I’m a student and blogger, time is something I seem to have little of…so, plan on it taking a few more days than expected. Also, today the challenge had you add in your own Gravatar. Go to Gravatar.com to build your own ID when replying to others blogposts.
Day 12: Finding Blogs on Bloglovin and following anywhere from 20 to 50 to 100 blogs that you find interesting. This process, Bloglovin makes simple. Finding blogs that are relevant and interesting is not only a fairly quick process, but also very interesting. As I haven’t experimented with reading blogs previously, it’s really quite cool to see how different everyone’s approach is. For travel, there are blogs that involve only women, then couples that found love, barefoot people, traveling with cats, you name it, it’s out there. So pick your topic and roll with it.
Day 13: Just writing another amazing blog post. Make sure you are checking back with the www.30dayblogchallenge for all the specific instructions. We’re making it, baby step by baby step. I hope you are enjoying the Colorado . I’m certainly enjoying getting out and about and enjoying the reason I moved here in the first place Also, the Italy posts certainly bring up a number of things I had forgotten over the years. It was fun to think back and remember some of the fun times!
Day 14: Today is one more day of creating a post. Create but do not share. They say not to overpower your audience with blog posts. Makes sense. I know I’m already unable to read everything that makes its way into my inbox and it becomes more spam than useful stuff. I truly appreciate all of the people that have subscribed to my site already. Gosh for you all to take time out of your day to read it, I guess I’d best have something worth reading.
Day 15: Another post, and on this day it gets shared with the world. I’ve been handling this for a minute, so par for the course. Hope y’all enjoy!
Day 16: Guest blog post. Today we check out other blogs and ask for permission to guest blog post and/or allow someone else to guest blog post on your site. By checking with other bloggers to see if they will allow a guest post, it will allow for additional exposure on their sites and their audience. The more lives you touch, the more exposure, and hopefully the more traffic to your own blog.
Day 17: Today we check back to see if we’ve received any responses from the people we sent our requests off to. If so, it’s time to work a plan with them to post something relevant on their site. This process certainly is going to take more than the two days allocated.
Day 18: Twitter it is. Since I began my Twitter account, I’ve looked for people with similar interests. The challenge is to identify people with similar interests and DM them to see if something you have written would be valuable to them. So as you move forward, make sure you are connecting with people that are like you.
Day 19: Writing a blog post and sharing it with the world. So far I’ve been trying to post a little something for you most days. So you all, make sure you are keeping up and writing as you go sharing on Facebook and Twitter.
Day 20: Today we have the option to do whatever it is we so desire to promote the blog. Whether it’s posting another post and sharing, posting on someone else’s blog, or writing a post to post in a new location. It’s your choice for the day.
Day 21: Time to find 2-3 forums and become an active participant. It’s a process in itself. First you must locate the forum, but with that, you must fully fill in your profile. It certainly takes time to do. All I did here was type in “travel forum” into Google and began to review the various forums for content I enjoyed looking at.
Day 22: Today is the day to post a blog post but not to share it with the world as to keep from inundating people with blog posts.
Day 23: A bit of a different way to write a blog post. Today I’m to write a post that is similar to one that some has already written and proposition it to them with the link of my own blog attached.
Day 24: Again we are locating 10-20 more blogs and placing a lot of high quality content on each including our own blog address. I can definitely see the value of networking. It has worked and is standard practice in the business world and blogging certainly falls under that line. It pushes traffic to your site and also gives you an opportunity to understand how other people put together their blogs. Learning from each other whether it is online or in person at forums is truly important.
Day 25: This day is exact to day 23. I’m beginning to wonder how this is going to earn funds. In the beginning the Matt stated that there would be on average about $400 in income. We haven’t even talked about how that would happen. At minimum, I’m enjoying what I’m doing, funds or not. I’m learning more than I thought I would just from opening myself up to trying different things online. I enjoy being a student and seeking out things to improve how I do things to date. I’ve gotten so used to only searching for things that are within what I currently know, it never really crosses my mind to go outside of that bubble. This process has certainly made me grow.
Day 26: This day is exactly like Day 18 where we get on Twitter, find those people that have written something in the same genre, we alter and add our own little bit to it and post. It’s all about building relationships.
Day 27: No email rec’d, so I wrote another post.
Day 28: Today is another day to post a blog post and share it with the world.
Day 29: No email rec’d, so I wrote another post.
Day 30: Blog completion. Today we finish. The directions discuss that we should be at the point of having a filled in blog with good content by this point. I would agree, this is true. Next up, the site should have a good amount of traffic going to it. Now I’m going to have to go back to see what I have missed. At this point there was nothing added in that I could tell that would add a revenue stream. So I must return to the beginning.
Check back with me tomorrow for….. THE FINAL SCOOP….what I learned, recommendations, and the all important, did I make any $$$ from this process.
